Mark thanked her for her concern but made it clear she should never enter again without permission. Margaret apologized repeatedly, clearly embarrassed. Though I was shaken, I began to calm down knowing Emma had been safe.
When I returned home, Margaret came by to apologize again. She shared that she had lost her daughter years ago, and hearing Emma cry had stirred her instincts. Slowly, we got to know her better. Over the weeks, she became a kind neighbor and even helped care for Emma when Mark worked late. What began as my worst fear turned into an unexpected bond.
