No stranger to disguise, Dustin Hoffman \u2013 who 30 years ago dressed in drag for Tootsie<\/p>\n\n\n\n

cloaked himself in secrecy to hide an unforgiving disease that almost claimed his life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2013, the Rain Man actor \u2013 75 at the time \u2013 revealed he secretly underwent treatment for throat cancer<\/p>\n\n\n\n

which was \u201csurgically cured,\u201d but he never spoke of it again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1967, a 30-year-old Dustin Hoffman had his breakthrough role in the romantic comedy The Graduate, a film that earned the actor his first Oscar nomination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the next several years, Hoffman appeared in classic films like All the President\u2019s Men (1976) and 1979\u2019s Kramer vs. Kramer, where he took home an Academy Award for Best Actor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1983, the California-born man then starred in the film Tootsie, where he played a dried-up actor who dresses up as a woman to land a role on a soap opera.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The hit film, where in drag he was being called a \u201cnottie\u201d instead of a \u201chottie,\u201d brought him to tears, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIf I was going to be a woman, I would want to be as beautiful as possible, and they said to me, \u2018That\u2019s as good as it gets.\u2019 Uh, that\u2019s as beautiful as we can get you,\u201d Hoffman recalled in an interview.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When he heard that he wasn\u2019t very pretty, the now 86-year-old man had an epiphany, forever changing how he treats women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI went home and started crying,\u201d Hoffman says. \u201cI think I\u2019m an interesting woman, when I look at myself on-screen, and I know that if I met myself at a party I would never talk to that character because she doesn\u2019t fulfill, physically, the demands that we\u2019re brought up to think women have to have in order for us to ask them out.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Though the comedy was the second highest grossing film of that year \u2013 E.T. The Extraterrestrial landed the top spot \u2013 Hoffman didn\u2019t think it was funny.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He adds: \u201c\u2026that was never a comedy for me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But Hoffman became one of Hollywood\u2019s most sought-after actors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earning his second Oscar for the 1988 film Rain Man, he then went onto collect six Golden Globes and one Primetime Emmy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018Detected early\u2019
In 2013, the man \u2013 who\u2019s very active in his career \u2013 fell quiet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Only a few months after Hoffman\u2019s directorial debut of the British comedy Quartet (2012), and shortly after wrapping production of Chef (2014), where he co-starred alongside Jon Favreau and Sofia Vergara, his representative let the world know why the beloved was in hiding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Revealing little information, publicist Jodi Gottlieb told People (through ABC News) the star was successfully treated for cancer, which he had kept private.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt was detected early, and he has been surgically cured,\u201d Gottlieb said. \u201cDustin is feeling great and is in good health.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to reports, the Tony Award nominee, who at the time was 75, would continue preventative treatments to minimize the chance of recurrence in the future. Though Gottlieb did not elaborate on what type of cancer, it\u2019s been suggested he had throat cancer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018Looked years younger than 86\u2019
Serving as a reminder of resilience, the Meet the Fockers didn\u2019t slow down after the devastating news was shared more than one decade ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since, he\u2019s loaned his voice to Master Shifu in two more installments of the Kung Fu Panda franchise (2008 to 2024), and co-starred in several other films, including Sam and Kate in 2022 and the 2024 sci-fi drama Megalopolis, which features an ensemble cast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In early March, 2024, Hello! reports that Hoffman and his wife Lisa Gottsegen \u2013 whom he married in 1980 \u2013 were spotted strolling through London together, sharing some sweet public displays of affection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hoffman married Gottsegen added four children to his brood of two that he started with his ex-wife Anne Byrne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The outlet writes, \u201cThe Hollywood legend looked years younger than 86 as he smiled and waved at the cameras. He was tanned and carefree as he strolled through the city and ducked into boutiques with his wife of 43 years.\u201c<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Though Hoffman has never spoken publicly about his battle with cancer, it appears he\u2019s doing very well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
