It’s a powerful device that will make most people happy. In May of 2024, it was finally replaced by a new model. They’re exceptional slates, especially for those who want a premium device for work and play. And while Apple’s marketing might suggest it’s for consuming rather than creating content, it’s no slouch with the latter. If you need more power or screen real estate than Apple’s base model iPad provides or don’t want to pony up the dough for an iPad Pro, the 6th generation iPad Air could be the tablet for you.

Products are chosen independently by our editors. It’s not perfect and the 13-inch version model might not be well-sized for all of the tasks people use tablets for, for the price, you will not find a better-built, more powerful option on the market today.

The back of the tablet hosts a single camera lens with a 12-megapixel sensor featuring Smart HDR (high dynamic range) and 4K video recording in the top left corner of the of the device. For a tablet, it takes great-looking photos and videos. However, it can’t hold a candle to the images produced by this year’s flagship phones from brands like Apple, Google, Samsung, or OnePlus. The iPad Air’s front-facing camera also has a 12-megapixel sensor.

New for this year is that the front-facing camera is in the long edge of the tablet—a long overdue design decision that means users will no longer appear to be looking off into the distance as they stare into the lens of the camera during a video call (having the camera embedded in the top bezel of the tablet for the past 14 years was the worst). This, along with Apple’s Center Stage technology, will help keep you looking your best on your FaceTime calls moving forward.

Into color? iPad Air is available in Blue, Purple, Space Grey, and Starlight (a pale gold-like color).

iPad Air (2024) specs

Price: 11-inch: from $599 (Wi-Fi) or $749 (Wi-Fi + Cellular); 13-inch: From $799 (Wi-Fi) or $949 (Wi-Fi + Cellular)

Processor: M2 chip, 8-core CPU, 10-core GPU, 16-core Neural Engine

Storage: 128GB, 256GB, 512GB, 1TB

Display: Liquid Retina Display 2420 x 1968 resolution at 264 ppi, plus nano-texture display glass option on 1TB and 2TB models

Cameras: 12MP Wide camera (4K video) and Landscape 12MP Ultra Wide front camera

Ports: USB-C connector

Connectivity: Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3, MIMO, 5G Cellular (on Wi-Fi + Cellular models)

Battery: As tested, up to 10 hours on Wi-Fi (9 hours using cellular)

Weight: 11-inch: 1.02 pounds (462 grams); 13-inch: 1.36 pounds (617 grams)

Dimensions: 11-inch: 9.74 x 7.02 x 0.24 inches; 13-inch: 11.04 x 8.46 x 0.24 inches

Color: Blue, Purple, Space Grey, Starlight

Warranty: One year limited warranty

What we like

The design

Credit: Reviewed / Seamus Bellamy

The latest iPad Air takes many of its design cues from the last generation model. This isn’t a surprise: while what Apple packs into its hardware may be innovative, its industrial design is, more often than not, iterated. This year, however, users will note that the tablet is just as influenced by the iPad Pro. The biggest similarity? The iPad Air now comes in two sizes: an 11-inch model and, for the first time, a 13-inch model—a display size previously only available to those who purchased an iPad Pro.

In most circumstances, a 13-inch tablet is better for consuming content, like watching TV shows and movies, looking at photos, and playing games. General web browsing and flicking through social media? Same deal. But the extra screen real estate offered by the 13-inch model comes with additional weight; around a third of a pound more than its 11-inch sibling. This might not sound like much, but the additional heft makes it uncomfortable to hold for extended periods.

Holding the 13-inch iPad Air like I might a magazine, for example, got uncomfortable, quickly. We think that this is a tablet best used in your lap or set up on a tablet or desk. So, think about basing the decision on what size to buy based on how you use a tablet: for productivity-oriented tasks, such as art, multitasking various productivity apps or working on a word processor app like Scrivener, 13 inches is a great size for getting things done—although you can game and stream content from services like Disney+ with it, too. If you plan to use your iPad to read, surf the web on the couch, or write on it in hand as you might do with a clipboard, 11 inches is ideal. No matter the size, the sixth-generation Air can be paired with a Magic Keyboard and Apple Pencil Pro. While either accessory can boost your productivity, they’ll also boost the weight of your pricey aluminum and glass slab.

The similarities between the Pro and Air go beyond their basic size and shapes. The power button, which in the case of the iPad Air doubles as a fingerprint sensor, is on the top right of the device. Volume controls are found along the same edge. Tip the tablet on its side and you’ll see its magnetic charging pad, designed to juice up and store an Apple Pencil Pro.

At the bottom of the tablet, you’ll find a USB-C port. There are four speaker grills on the top and bottom edge of the table. However, only two of the grills actually have speakers under them. The other pair is used to resonate with the sound of the speakers. Even though the iPad Air only has half of the speakers that the Pro does, it still sounds great.

As with the latest base-model iPad and this year’s iPad Pro, the iPad Air’s front-facing camera is now located on the long edge of the tablet. This makes it easier to use FaceTime when it’s held or propped up horizontally—the orientation most people use for video chats, based on our experience—a change we feel is a huge quality-of-life improvement over the design of previous models.

The vibrant display

While the iPad Air (2024) may not rock the same Ultra Retina XDR Display with a tandem OLED screen that this year’s iPad Pro does, it’ll still make your apps and content pop. Its Liquid Retina Display IPS technology offers a wide color gamut and excellent viewing angles. The display’s resolution is 2732 x 2048 at 264 pixels per inch (PPI), with a brightness of up to 600 nits. If you plan on using your tablet outdoors regularly, you might want to consider springing for a more expensive iPad Pro.

The 2024 model of the tablet literally outshines the Air with 1,600 nits of peak HDR brightness for highlights, or up to 1,000 nits with a max full white screen in HDR. This makes it a superior choice for viewing in intense sunlight. iPad Pro is much better for viewing outside. For example, an outdoor digital sign at, say, a theme park or gas station, needs to have a minimum display brightness of 800 to 1,000 nits to be seen clearly under partial or full sunlight.

During testing, we gamed, streamed high-definition content from Apple TV+ and Disney+, and read a lot using the Kobo app and surfing the Internet. We even spent time with a few comic books using an app called Chunky. Every single piece of content we perused looked great.

Excellent performance

The iPad Air (2024) fared very well in the performance department, thanks to its M2 chip with an 8-core CPU and 10-core GPU—the same chipset used in the last generation iPad Pro. As part of our tests, we placed this year’s iPad Air next to a last-generation M1 iPad Air to observe the difference in performance, even without running any benchmark software, it’s easy to see how much more powerful the sixth-generation iPad Air is.

We ran other subjective tests as well: while they will run faster on a late model iPad Pro, Logic Pro for iPad 2, and Final Cut Pro for iPad 2 on the 2024 iPad Air, and found they were entirely useable. Similarly, when it comes to AI, the 16-core Neural Engine embedded with Apple’s M2 is said to be 40 percent faster than with an M1. This was noticeable with AI-oriented tasks like Live Text to copy text in photos and videos, translating languages, and using Visual Look Up to identify objects in images from the Photos app.

On the objective side of things, we used two benchmarking apps to test the performance of the iPad Air (2024) against the fifth-generation iPad Air (2022) and this year’s iPad Pro (2024). Using Geekbench on the new iPad Air, we got a CPU single-core score of 2581. Multi-core usage scored the tablet a 9377. Compare this to 2390 for single-core and 8735 for a multi-core score on a last-generation iPad Air: not too shabby an upgrade. Wondering how this fares against a 2024 iPad Pro? Geekbench awarded Apple’s top-of-the-line tablet a 3788 single-core score and 14347 as a multi-core score.

iPad Air is an extraordinary tablet that’s not easy to find fault with. Those upgrading from an older model will be thrilled with its speed and features.

For Geekbench’s GPU performance on the iPad Air, it was a score of 42188, compared to 33218 for the 2022 iPad Air and 53893 for iPad Pro (2024), respectively.

We also tried 3DMark for iPad Air (2024), which received an overall score of 2553 at 18.9 frames per second (fps), compared to 3659 at 27.1 fps for iPad Pro (2024) and 2017 at 14.9 fps for iPad Air (2022).

You should know that since we noticed a slightly different number with each benchmarking test, we ran the same tests, three times across all three tablets and used the average score.

What do all of these numbers mean? Basically, the M2-powered iPad Air will likely be enough tablet for most people. No matter what you like to do with your iPad—playing demanding games, editing audio, video, or photos—a sixth-generation iPad Air will be able to handle it all. Remember, the last generation of iPad Pro used an M2 processor.

For very light tasks, like web browsing and e-reading or doom-scrolling social media, you could probably get away with an entry-level iPad or iPad Mini. But, for those who need even more power for video or animation work, and/or for those who want more storage, iPad Pro is the way to go.

Then there’s the tablet’s battery. We found its longevity between charges was on par with Apple’s estimates at about 10 hours for most tasks like video playback, or multitasking (like listening to music while web browsing). Expect a few hours less juice between charging if you’re running memory-intensive apps like AAA games or noodling in Adobe Lightroom.

What we don’t like

It’s pricey

Credit: Reviewed / Seamus Bellamy

Starting at $599 for the 11-inch Wi-Fi–only model (128GB), the iPad Air is one of the most expensive tablets on the market—excluding Apple’s own iPad Pro (from $999), of course, and a premium Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 (from $799), Galaxy Tab S9+ (from $999) or Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra (from $1,199).

For the model we reviewed—13-inch, 512GB of storage and Wi-Fi + Cellular connectivity—you’re looking at $1,249. Want 1TB in the same configuration? It’s $1,449.

Then you add an Apple Pencil for $79, or an Apple Pencil Pro for $129 and it could be closer to $2,000 after taxes. This figure doesn’t include Apple Care+. That’s a lot of money for anyone to spend, especially with the economy being what is at the time this review was written.

Don’t get it wet

You might not think this is a big deal, but liquids are a part of everyday life. Given we’re a quarter of the way into the 21st century, you’d think our portable tech would be waterproof by now.

My phone is. So are my smartwatch and e-reader. So, why not a tablet as pricey as the iPad Air? Everyone gets caught in the rain with their tech from time to time. We all spill a drink now and again. By comparison, Samsung and Lenovo both offer Android tablets that are IP68 rated.

No new magic keyboard

While the new iPad Pro works with Apple’s New Magic Keyboard (2024), it does not work with iPad Air (2024). Air users will have to settle for the OG version of the accessory. It’s a strange decision on Apple’s part, considering that the new Apple Pencil Pro, announced at the same time as their latest tablet keyboard case, works just fine with the iPad Air.

This isn’t to say that you’ll have a sub-standard typing experience with the original Magic Keyboard—it’s easily one of the best tablet keyboards out there. But having access to the same function keys that MacBook users have come to rely on, not to mention a sturdier aluminum platform for typing on, would have been a welcome option.

Limited storage options

For a tablet with a base price of $600, we would have liked to have seen a larger amount of minimum storage. 256GB would do the trick: that’s the same amount of storage space as the base model 2024 iPad Pro has. In 2024, 128GB with no option to expand the amount of space on your device with an SD card or upgraded SSDS is a pittance. A few years ago, 128GB was enough room to store all of the apps and files that most people could ever use.

However, apps are consistently taking up more and more space—for example, on iPad, Assassin’s Creed Mirage chews up 12GB of storage. 4K video and RAW files take up a huge amount of space as well. If you don’t use a streaming service for your music, you’ll be surprised how fast an SSD gets tight on space. In the years to come—and for many, even right now—128GB simply isn’t enough.

iPadOS

Can an iPad replace your computer? The answer depends on what you do with your computer. But, in general, no. The touch-oriented nature of a tablet interface, which is optimized for poking and swiping, the effectiveness of using a trackpad or mouse and other features we take for granted on a Mac or PC can all be stifling, even on a device as well designed as an iPad.

While the App Store provides thousands of polished pieces of software for iPad users to use, to provide an experience that can compete with what Windows 11 or macOS have to offer iPadOS itself has some ways to go. File management, non-touch-based UI interactions, and the consistency of background app refresh need to be vastly improved. You can see that Apple is putting the work in. The addition of Stage Manager marked a big leap forward in multitasking for tablet users, but its limitations can still be vexing.

Should you buy the iPad Air (2024)?

Yes, it’s the Goldilocks of the Apple iPad Lineup

Credit: Reviewed / Seamus Bellamy

Not underpowered. Most people will find this tablet is more than up to helping them complete most productivity and creative tasks, processor-intensive gaming, and yes, some good old-fashioned streaming and surfing.

It’s not an inexpensive purchase and like any device, it comes with its quirks.
