He is one of the last people in the world to rely on the 1928-era respirator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite his unusual circumstances, Paul has led a very fulfilling life, never settling for less.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI am not going to accept from anybody their limitations on my life. Not gonna do it. My life is incredible.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At six years old, Paul came home to his family\u2019s house in a Dallas, Texas, suburb and told his mother he wasn\u2019t feeling well. Born in 1946, he had always been a healthy, happy, and energetic child, but something was clearly wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-2 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" data-id=\"1766\" src=\"https:\/\/pulsperry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/image-3.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1766\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pulsperry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/image-3.webp 640w, https:\/\/pulsperry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/image-3-300x225.webp 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOh my God, not my son,\u201d Paul recalled his mother saying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following the doctor\u2019s recommendations, he spent the next few days recuperating in bed, but it was clear he had polio and was not improving. Less than a week after he first felt ill, he lost his ability to swallow, breathe, or grasp anything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When his parents eventually took him to the hospital, he joined many other children with the same symptoms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-3 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"525\" data-id=\"1767\" src=\"https:\/\/pulsperry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/4-7.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1767\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pulsperry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/4-7.webp 640w, https:\/\/pulsperry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/4-7-300x246.webp 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Before polio vaccines were available, the virus incapacitated more than 15,000 individuals annually. Even asymptomatic individuals could spread<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Polio\" title=\"\"> polio<\/a>, which presented symptoms like fatigue, fever, stiffness, muscle pain, and vomiting. In rare cases, polio resulted in paralysis and death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-4 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"493\" data-id=\"1768\" src=\"https:\/\/pulsperry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/5-6.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1768\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pulsperry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/5-6.webp 640w, https:\/\/pulsperry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/5-6-300x231.webp 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>After being initially declared dead by one doctor, Paul was given a second chance at life by another, who performed an emergency tracheotomy and placed him in an iron lung.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Three days later, when Paul awoke, he found himself surrounded by rows of children also in iron lungs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t know what had happened. I had all kinds of imaginings, like I\u2019d died. I kept asking myself: Is this what death is? Is this a coffin? Or have I gone to some undesirable place?\u201d Paul told As It Happens host Carol Off in 2017.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-5 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"960\" data-id=\"1769\" src=\"https:\/\/pulsperry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/2-9.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1769\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pulsperry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/2-9.webp 640w, https:\/\/pulsperry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/2-9-200x300.webp 200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Unable to speak due to the tracheotomy, the situation was even more frightening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI tried to move, but I couldn\u2019t move. Not even a finger. I tried to touch something to figure it out, but I never could. So it was pretty strange.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The iron lung, developed in the late 1920s, was the first machine to ventilate a person. Hermetically sealed from the neck down, it creates negative pressure that draws air into the patient\u2019s lungs. When pressure is relieved, the patient exhales.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Paul spent no less than 18 months in the metal container recovering from the initial illness. He wasn\u2019t alone; 1952, the year Paul contracted polio, saw over 58,000 cases in the United States, mostly among children, and 3,145 deaths.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cRows and rows of iron lungs as far as the eye can see.
