If he felt lonely, I’d invite his friends over to stay. When school became challenging, I found ways to help him through it. I even homeschooled him to make things easier. My whole life was about making sure he was happy and free from struggle.

But in trying to protect him from the world, I realize now that I sheltered him too much. I gave him everything—money, a car, clothes—without teaching him how to navigate life’s challenges on his own. When he faced real difficulties, he didn’t know how to handle them because I had always done it for him. In trying to be the best mom, I didn’t prepare him for the independence he needed. I thought I was helping him, but I never let him build the resilience he needed to face life’s ups and downs.

Looking back, I see that my intentions were filled with love, but I missed the balance. I didn’t let him struggle and learn how to get through hard times.
