From the way he danced with her in the kitchen to how he tried to save her in the end. When she passed away, he packed what he wanted, got rid of the rest, and moved out. There’s one thing, though, he held onto: a coffee can. The last one she bought before she got sick, along with the spoon she used to stir it. Every single day, that’s how he starts his morning—with her.

On April 13th, my parents would have celebrated 41 years of marriage. No doubt, if she were still here, they’d start their anniversary with a cup of coffee and end it dancing in the kitchen. He pours his new coffee into the old can and uses the same spoon, keeping her alive in those little rituals. It’s a love that still breathes in the quiet moments, in the first sips of morning coffee.

We all hope to be loved like that someday—that our legacy is something as simple as a coffee can and spoon. A small gesture that means the world to someone who misses us.
