<\/figure>\n\n\n\nI (35F) have been married to my husband Michael (39M) for 5 years. Before me, Michael was married to his high school sweetheart \u201cLauren\u201d for 12 years until she left him for another man. Their divorce was messy and Michael was devastated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It took him years to recover. Yesterday, Michael got a call that his ex had passed away unexpectedly. I overheard him crying on the phone with Lauren\u2019s sister, who invited him to the funeral. After he hung up, I told him point-blank that I didn\u2019t want him going to the funeral.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAre you serious right now?\u201d he asked incredulously. \u201cMy ex-wife just di:ed. Have some empathy!\u201d \u201cEmpathy? For the woman who ripped your heart out and left you a broken mess that I had to piece back together? I don\u2019t think so,\u201d I retorted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cIf you go to that funeral, I\u2019ll know that you still have feelings for her.\u201d His outburst shook me to the core when his eyes flashed with anger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cDon\u2019t be so insecure. Just because I\u2019m grieving someone I loved for over a decade doesn\u2019t mean I\u2019m still in love with her! I\u2019m going to the funeral to pay my respects and get closure, not to rekindle an old flame.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cIf you walk out that door, don\u2019t bother coming back,\u201d I threatened. \u201cI\u2019m not Lauren. I won\u2019t abandon our marriage,\u201d Michael said sadly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cBut your jealousy and lack of trust really hurts. This controlling behavior is not okay. I\u2019m going to the funeral, and I hope you can find it in your heart to be okay with that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Michael packed a bag and left for the funeral two states away. Now, I\u2019m sitting here alone, reeling from his revelation and outburst.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Did I overreact in trying to forbid him from going? Or was I justified in feeling threatened and betrayed?
