My parents, both intelligent professionals, used to hear mysterious footsteps climbing the wooden stairs to an unused bedroom. One Christmas, my great aunt\u2014old, distinguished, and British\u2014suggested that the disturbances were the work of a ghost and advised my parents to laugh at it.
