He was fourteen, but he\u2019d known from the time he could barely walk that daddy didn\u2019t like to touch him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His dad never played with him, and when he talked to him, his voice was cold, and he never ever said Evan\u2019s name. He wasn\u2019t like that with Evan\u2019s little brother and sister, not at all. He was kind and attentive and adoring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Evan knew that there had to be something wrong with HIM or his dad would love him. He was lucky that his mom was so great. She almost made up for his dad\u2019s coldness. His mom would look off into the distance with the saddest look on her face. But when he asked her what was wrong, she would smile and say that everything was okay. Once, he even tried to talk to his father, and Jacob Masters just listened to Evan\u2019s stammering attempt at getting through to him and just walked away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>There is power in truth.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>When Evan spoke to Christine about Jacob\u2019s dislike for him, his mother just hugged him very tight and said, \u201cBaby, you are so loved! Please, please know that!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When Evan turned fifteen, his life turned upside down, but it really all started the day before. His was a privileged neighborhood and vagrants were rare. Whatever Jacob\u2019s failures as a father, he was a brilliant businessman and kept his family in the lap of luxury.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ahead of him were two of his neighbors who also happened to be schoolmates, Greg and Halston. The two boys were standing in front of the homeless man, barring his path and taunting him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHey there, trash-man!\u201d Greg said, giving the homeless man a push. \u201cWe don\u2019t let people into this neighborhood unless they have a bath and a shave!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The man held up his hands. \u201cPlease,\u201d he said. \u201cI don\u2019t want any trouble, I\u2019m just walking through\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.amomama.com\/f094dcd86451ed8b31c2127f95648cbe.jpg\" alt=\"Jacob loved his younger children. | Source: Unsplash\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Jacob loved his younger children. | Source: Unsplash<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Halston stepped forward and gave the man a harder shove. \u201cYou don\u2019t want trouble but you found it!\u201d he yelled. \u201cWe don\u2019t want your kind stinking up our street!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Evan couldn\u2019t stand it anymore and stepped forward. \u201cStop it,\u201d he said. \u201cLet this man go!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Greg and Halston looked at Evan, and Greg sneered. \u201cWhat are you going to do? Invite him to your birthday party tomorrow? You love dirt?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLeave him,\u201d Evan repeated, and he dropped his backpack and balled up his fists. Greg and Halston could see he was serious, and Evan wasn\u2019t someone they wanted to tangle with. Evan turned to the man and asked, \u201cAre you alright?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The man nodded. \u201cYes,\u201d he said. \u201cThank you for your help. Those boys\u2026All I wanted was to find an old friend\u2019s address\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWould you like a glass of water?\u201d Evan asked the man.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNo, no!\u201d he cried. \u201cI\u2019m alright. You are a kind boy! What is your name?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Evan smiled and stuck out his hand to shake the homeless man\u2019s. \u201cI\u2019m Evan Masters. His mom was busy preparing everything for his birthday party and his father was grumbling that she was late making dinner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jacob just hated it when Christine made a fuss of Evan and Evan knew that his birthday party would be a nightmare. Jacob would find a way to spoil it for him \u2014 he always did. Evan went up to his room and stayed away from the fuss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The next day, he couldn\u2019t escape. They were mostly Jacob\u2019s friends and their kids, and very few of Evan\u2019s friends. It was almost as if the party was for his little brother and sister.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When the doorbell rang, Jacob said, \u201cEvan, open the door! It\u2019s probably the magician I hired for your brother and sister!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Evan couldn\u2019t believe it, but he went to the door and opened it. The homeless man was standing there. \u201cHi,\u201d he said. \u201cYesterday those boys said it was your birthday, so I brought you a present.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He opened his hand and offered Evan a pretty gold locket on a chain. Evan gasped. \u201cWho are you?\u201d he cried, then he yelled, \u201cMOM! MOM! Come here!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Something in his voice must have transmitted his urgency because Christine ran to the door. When she saw the homeless man, her knees nearly gave way. \u201cPeter?\u201d she cried. \u201cPeter is that you?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The man stepped forward and his face lit up. Suddenly, he looked exactly like the man in the photo. \u201cChrissy,\u201d he whispered. \u201cI\u2019ve been looking for you, trying to remember\u2026I came to Jacob\u2019s house\u2026Are you here for his son\u2019s birthday party?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.amomama.com\/e85b7ac06d1048362a6a3ccdedfd5d3b.jpg\" alt=\"Evan's mother was shocked when she saw the homeless man. | Source: Unsplash\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Evan\u2019s mother was shocked when she saw the homeless man. | Source: Unsplash<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Christine was in tears and she wrapped her arms around Peter and sobbed. That was what Jacob saw when he came to the door to find out what was taking so long.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Christine was deadly pale. \u201cJacob, you told me Peter drowned on that fishing trip! You told me he was dead!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jacob hunched his shoulders and he couldn\u2019t look his wife in the eye. \u201cHe fell out, he hit his head on a tree trunk\u2026\u201d he said. \u201cWhen he woke up he couldn\u2019t remember his own name\u2026I\u2019ve always loved you, Christine, I thought it was my chance. I didn\u2019t hurt him. I drove him to a hospital 600 miles away and left him there. I didn\u2019t hurt him\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.amomama.com\/5136bee41f31fe5d78b22d8b3a3af42a.jpg\" alt=\"Jacob admitted he lied to Christine about Peter's death. | Source: Unsplash\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Jacob admitted he lied to Christine about Peter\u2019s death. | Source: Unsplash<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou broke my heart!\u201d Christine cried. \u201cEvan grew up without his father, and Peter has suffered God knows what!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m still your husband!\u201d Jacob said angrily. \u201cI\u2019m the father of your children!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Christine shook her head. \u201cYou married me knowing my husband was still alive and that makes you a bigamist!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou go and live with your homeless husband and your brat under the bridge!\u201d screamed Jacob. \u201cYou have NOTHING!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Christine smiled. \u201cYou are wrong,\u201d she said calmly. \u201cI never sold our old house. We have a home, and I\u2019d rather be poor with him than live with you in the lap of luxury.
