I wasn&#8217;t the typical contestant\u2014average looks, a tan complexion, and an awkward gait were just a few reasons I felt out of place. I had never been into makeup or heels, and the world of beauty pageants seemed foreign. Yet, despite my hesitation, I found myself in a room full of anxious young women, wondering why I had even shown up. I made a few jokes, snapped some selfies, and gave pep talks to the other nervous contestants. When it was my turn for the ramp walk, my inexperience with heels had me picturing a dramatic fall. But somehow, I made it through without incident. The women around me were confident, intelligent, and had their own stories to tell. The experience taught me that beauty is about more than looks\u2014it&#8217;s about confidence, joy, and self-assurance.
