DIY dad builds dream pool in garden thanks to YouTube tutorials<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Leveraging the power of social media, a DIY dad turned his backyard into a tropical paradise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The father of two found some inspiration in a YouTube video that showed a woman building a pool in his yard and then he decided to take the plunge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wanting to \u201cgive it a go,\u201d Alex Dodman, who had \u201czero experience,\u201d rented a mini digger and that same day he started scooping dirt from his yard for the pool. Keep reading about this man\u2019s dream project and how he did it on a budget!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2018, Alex Doman, an ambulance worker from Essex, moved into a rundown home with his partner Sarah and their two young children Allie and Eddie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The house was a fixer upper and Dodman, now 38, was inspired by social media to tear apart the family home so he could build a dream home for his family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The renos started with a YouTube video that showed a tradesperson putting up a wall stud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the next while, Dodman, who works for National Health Service, added a gym in the back garden, a family-sized cinema space, and a fold-down bed in his sleek home office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And then he learned the home, purchased for \u00a3250,000 (about $322,000 US), had more than doubled in value to \u00a3525,000 ($675,000 US).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe had the house valued and were told it was now worth \u00a3525,000, which I put down to the work I\u2019ve done,\u201d Doman tells The Sun in February 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Realizing he had a natural talent for DIY, the father was ready for his next project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Diving in
While taking a lunch break, Dodman explains that he \u201cwatched a YouTube video of a woman in Holland who built her own pool in her garden.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Expressing that he\u2019s \u201cdreamt of having a pool\u201d and \u201ceven earmarked a little patch to hopefully build it on one day,\u201d Dodman dove right into his new DIY project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAs soon as I\u2019d watched [YouTube video] I rang up and hired a digger. I\u2019d never driven a digger before, so I\u2019d dug this massive hole and then there was no going back.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018A blessing\u2019
Though there was no going back he did hit a huge obstacle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dodman started building the pool in January 2020 \u201cbut then Covid hit, and [he] couldn\u2019t get any materials for ages.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stuck with a giant hole in his yard, Dodman explains he had to get creative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Describing the pandemic closures as \u201ca bit of a blessing,\u201d the DIY dad \u201cstarted buying the things [he] needed from Facebook Marketplace which was a lot cheaper.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018Zero experience\u2019
Dodman shows his 247,000 TikTok followers the 12 stages he followed to build \u201ca fully functioning swimming pool in [his] backyard with zero experience.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Each clip details various steps of the project, like learning to operate the digger, plumbing, laying bricks to tiling and lastly diving into his new blue pool.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And he did it for less than \u00a310,000 ($12,871 US).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking of his dream build, Dodman says, \u201cIn general, the hardest thing to learn from a DIY perspective was plumbing \u2013 that\u2019s quite annoying. If you do it wrong, you get drips and stuff.\u201d He continues, \u201cBut it\u2019s not as hard as I thought it was going to be, it really is kind of like water LEGO.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since the pool was completed, Dodman added a garden cabin, a pergola with a large projection screen to watch games while soaking in the hot tub, a barbeque house and a playhouse for his two children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Explaining he wasn\u2019t \u201cconfident in DIY,\u201d the renovations hobbyist says he learned by \u201cjust by giving it a go.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019ve made mistakes and stuff doesn\u2019t always turn out how you think but giving it a go is the best way.\u201d Crediting YouTube for his successes, Dodman adds, \u201cI learned almost everything from YouTube, and there are a lot of builders\u2019 forums online where you can find help on loads of projects, any problem you come across, it\u2019s likely someone else has in the past and has written about it online.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While Dodman\u2019s projects are to be applauded, we do not recommend you start digging massive holes in your backyard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
