Growing up in the same church and schools, we never thought about dating. But just before her 16th birthday, she asked me to take her on her first date. Afterward, we wandered through the mall, but the fountain was roped off for repairs. Improvising, we stood in the parking garage and tossed our pennies into a puddle below. By the 49th penny, we were out, though I thought the roll should\u2019ve had 50. Inside was a penny, punched with a heart, and a page from her old journal. It told the story of our first date, where she\u2019d secretly pocketed that 50th penny. Her wish was simple\u2014to marry someone like me.
