While my parents covered the basics during university, I still worked part-time, and as a trainee Chartered Accountant, I started a VAT service to help fund my time at the London Business School. Eventually, I became an analyst at a major investment bank, where I discovered arbitrage and spread betting before they were even mainstream. Between awards for research and successful trades, I hit my first million before 30. Back then, in Asia, that was a huge achievement\u2014the average salary was about $15,000 a year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/pulsperry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/image-856.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-24990\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pulsperry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/image-856.png 1024w, https:\/\/pulsperry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/image-856-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/pulsperry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/image-856-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/pulsperry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/image-856-768x768.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>With that success, however, came two toxic beliefs: &#8220;self-belief&#8221; and &#8220;entitlement.&#8221; I started thinking I could do no wrong, and I spent recklessly. My career continued to soar, and for over a decade, I rode that wave\u2014until the Asian Economic Crisis. In the blink of an eye, two-thirds of my wealth vanished. My ego took the biggest hit. How could I, with all my &#8220;carefully crafted&#8221; strategies, lose so much? That\u2019s when I learned two harsh truths: first, making money when the economy is booming doesn\u2019t make you a genius. I\u2019ve done well since, but I understand now that making that first million, which I essentially gambled into existence, was only the first step.
