My stomach dropped. I crept closer, staying out of sight. Then I heard James reply, casual as ever:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou know I would have NEVER married her if you hadn\u2019t given me the\u2026.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My stomach twisted. My mom\u2019s voice cut him off, sharp and urgent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cShh! James! She might hear us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m just saying, the money is nice and all that. But you didn\u2019t need to go that far. The money\u2019s nice, but living with her\u2026 It\u2019s not exactly what I signed up for. I have to check on her every single time the house is too quiet. And I have to monitor everything she eats. Do you know how difficult that is?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI told you,\u201d my mom whispered, her voice insistent. \u201cShe\u2019s fragile. Nobody else would\u2019ve\u2026 well, you know. Just be patient, James. It\u2019s not forever. Soon, when she\u2019s doing better at work, you can leave.
