Credit: 20th Century Studios<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The heartfelt movie, directed by Lasse Hallstr\u00f6m, is a remake of the Seijir\u014d K\u014dyama\u2019s 1987 Japanese film&nbsp;<em>Hachik\u014d Monogatari.<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The original film tells the true story of an Akita dog named Hachik\u014d, who lived in Japan from 1923 to 1935.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 2009 version is set in modern-day America and stars Richard Gere, Joan Allen, Sarah Roemer, Jason Alexander, and Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The remake\u2019s synopsis reads: \u201cA professor finds an abandoned dog and takes him home. Credit: 20th Century Studios<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>After making&nbsp;<em>Hachi: A Dog\u2019s Tale<\/em>, Gere opened up about its development and confessed to crying \u2018like a baby\u2019 when reading the script.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI was telling people over dinner, and I could only get halfway through the story and I would start crying,\u201d the Hollywood star, who plays the professor, told a news conference, per&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/gere-choked-up-over-japanese-dog-film\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CNN<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He continued: \u201cI wasn\u2019t sure if it was just a very sensitive reaction I had that day, so I read it again a few days later and had the same reaction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is a love story.
