Meet Wikie<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Wikie, an orca at Marineland Aquarium in France, can mimic sounds like \u201chello\u201d and \u201cAmy.\u201d Remarkably, she does this with little to no practice, sometimes succeeding on her first try.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mimicry is natural for orcas. They copy movements and even the calls of other marine animals. \u201cWe wanted to test their vocal flexibility,\u201d said Josep Call, a professor at the University of St. Andrews.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trained to Copy<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Wikie was trained to imitate another orca\u2019s movements. Using this training, researchers had her copy five unfamiliar orca sounds and human words like \u201chello\u201d and \u201cbye-bye.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
