His life changed forever in 2001, when a house fire left his face and neck severely disfigured. As a volunteer firefighter, Patrick didn\u2019t hesitate to help, but the burning house collapsed on him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He suffered third-degree burns to his face, scalp, and upper torso, losing his ears, lips, most of his nose, and eyelid tissue. Over the years, Patrick endured more than 70 surgeries and lived in constant pain, wearing sunglasses and a cap to hide his scars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hope came in 2015, when Dr. Eduardo D. Rodriguez of NYU Langone Medical Center performed a groundbreaking 26-hour face transplant. The donor was 26-year-old David Rodebaugh, whose mother, Nancy Millar, made the selfless decision to donate her son\u2019s face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, Patrick is thriving.
