Throughout his career as a doctor, he had seen innumerable moments of optimism, when someone’s spirit carried them through a time when life seemed to be hanging by a thread. Tragedies, however, also occurred—moments that broke hearts and left a wound that no medication or treatment could ease. Working in an emergency department had brought Stephen both happiness and sadness, and he believed he had become accustomed to the delicate balance between life and death.

Stephen, a man struggling to understand Caitlyn’s passing, hears the sound of Rick Johnson, Caitlyn’s ex-boyfriend who had recently disappeared. Caitlyn had ended their relationship after learning about Rick’s unpredictable conduct, excessive drinking, and irascible temper. Rick disappeared when she became pregnant, and Caitlyn claims that he never provided financial or emotional assistance and showed little concern for his impending fatherhood. Suddenly, Rick arrived in the hospital hallway, causing a stir in the hospital hallway. Stephen seized Rick by the collar and pushed him against the wall in a moment of wrath and sorrow.

Rick wriggled in Stephen’s grasp, saying “Dead, Caitlyn? That isn’t possible. Stephen must see my children. I must see them. I will return for them. I own them!”

A impotent wrath tightened Stephen’s chest. Stephen had assured his sister that he would safeguard her children, and she had spent her final days worried about their safety. After all Caitlyn had been through, he wasn’t going to let Rick come along and steal them. In less than a week, Stephen made a decision that would forever alter his life. He saw a family court attorney to talk about adopting the children and keeping Rick from getting custody. Although it was a severe measure, Stephen believed there was no other choice. The idea of children residing under Rick’s roof, exposed to the same instability and potential maltreatment Caitlyn had experienced, was too much for Stephen to handle.

Stephen’s hired attorney, Robert Neal, inquired about the commitment to adopt triplets, especially if the father is still living. Stephen agreed, as Caitlyn had planned to call them Ethan, Lucas, and Oliver. The court case was not simple, with Rick pretended to be heartbroken as he appeared in court, crying for the judge about how much he “loved his children” and how he “couldn’t live without them.” However, Stephen’s attorney had proof, including text messages, Caitlyn’s audio recordings, reports of Rick’s drinking problem, and claims that Caitlyn refused to marry him because he didn’t seek help.

The judge’s decision was ultimately unambiguous: “This court believes that Mr. Rick Johnson has not shown stable circumstances for raising these children.” The children’s maternal uncle, Dr. Stephen Mansfield, will be granted guardianship. The court dismissed it.

After the trial, Stephen was emotionally and physically spent. He arrived home to find his wife, Monica, in the living room. She refused to look at him in the eye, saying that all three of his adopted children arrived at once. Stephen couldn’t stop her, and she left without turning around. On top of the great relief of gaining custody and the searing anguish of losing Caitlyn, it was a new low point. With three frail lives on his shoulders, he was now genuinely alone.

ALSO READ…

A Promise Accomplished One guy who believed in miracles was Stephen Mansfield.
