When I married Ryan two years ago, I knew his mother, Margaret, didn\u2019t like me. Her eyes always narrowed when I walked in, like I carried something distasteful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“She\u2019ll come around, Cat,” Ryan assured me. She never did\u2014not to me or my kids, Emma (5) and Liam (7).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One evening, I overheard her whisper, “She trapped him with her ready-made family.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I confronted Ryan that night, tears streaming. “She thinks I married you for money.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ryan\u2019s jaw clenched. “I\u2019ll handle it. She respects all of us, or she loses me.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ryan kept his promise, but when he died in a car accident, Margaret\u2019s cruelty escalated. She blamed me, then locked us out of our home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Devastated, I turned to Ryan\u2019s lawyer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Ryan left everything to you,” he revealed, “and if Margaret interfered, she\u2019d forfeit her inheritance.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In court, the judge ruled in my favor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By nightfall, Margaret\u2019s belongings were on the curb\u2014the same way she\u2019d tossed out ours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“You can\u2019t do this!” she shrieked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I held up my keys. “Ryan made sure I could.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
