THE LITTLE BOY WITH THE HUGE SHOPPING CART WOULDN\u2019T STOP<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I was at the store, minding my own business, when I saw this little boy\u2014maybe seven or eight\u2014pushing a huge shopping cart. It was almost too big for him, and it was already half full.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At first, I didn\u2019t think much of it. Maybe his parents were in another aisle grabbing something specific. But every time I turned a corner, I saw him again\u2014grabbing a box of pasta, a bag of apples, a gallon of milk. He had a crumpled list in his hand, squinting at it, carefully checking things off.
No parents in sight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After a while, curiosity got the best of me. I casually wandered closer and watched as he struggled to lift a big sack of potatoes into the cart. It was way too heavy for him, but he wasn\u2019t giving up.
I finally stepped in. \u201cHey, buddy. Need a hand?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He flinched when I spoke, gripping the cart tightly. “I got it,” he muttered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Where are your parents?” I asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThey\u2019re… at home. Waiting for me,\u201d he replied, avoiding my gaze.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cShopping all by yourself?\u201d I frowned, eyeing the groceries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His voice was defensive. \u201cYeah. I know how.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His small hands clutched the cart, and I asked softly, \u201cAre your parents sick?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Mom is. She\u2019s in bed. Dad\u2019s not around.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I felt a lump in my throat. “How old are you?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Eight,” he whispered. “It\u2019s just me and Mom. If I don\u2019t get food, we don\u2019t eat.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I knelt beside him. \u201cLet me help.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He nodded, eyes wide. \u201cOkay.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
