At the age of 78, my neighbor lives alone. A woman of peace and kindness. I noticed that she was being visited by a young man. I heard screams when he got there, but it would have been nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One day I knocked on the door because I was starting to worry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They\u2019re at ease. Abruptly, an old woman wearing a karate kimono emerges from behind the door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I was in complete awe! He began demonstrating different poses and lunges to her because she wanted to try something new in her later years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before I could respond, the young man came to the door, smiling sheepishly. \u201cI guess the noise was a bit much, huh?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My neighbor\u2014whom I had known as the quiet, gentle Mrs. Thompson\u2014suddenly dropped into a perfect fighting stance, her movements sharp and precise. She threw a rapid series of punches and kicks, her kimono rustling with each movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I stood there, mouth agape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWell?\u201d she asked, hands on her hips, still beaming. \u201cWhat do you think?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cW-what\u2026 what are you doing?\u201d I finally managed to stutter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The young man chuckled. \u201cShe\u2019s learning karate. And she\u2019s pretty darn good at it too.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mrs. Thompson\u2019s face flushed with pride. \u201cI decided it was about time I tried something new. I\u2019ve spent most of my life being quiet and gentle. But there\u2019s still some fight left in me!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I stared at her, stunned. \u201cI-I thought you were\u2026 I mean, I heard shouting\u2026 I thought you were in trouble!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She burst out laughing, a joyous, musical sound. \u201cOh, that was just me practicing my kiai\u2014my battle cry! It\u2019s supposed to make my punches stronger!\u201d She demonstrated, letting out a fierce shout as she punched the air. It was surprisingly intimidating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The young man, who I later learned was her instructor, nodded approvingly. \u201cShe\u2019s got the spirit of a warrior. I\u2019ve never seen someone her age so dedicated.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Reason Behind It<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Mrs. Thompson\u2019s face softened. \u201cYou know, after my husband passed, this house got so quiet. Too quiet. I needed something to keep me moving, to keep me strong.\u201d She looked down at her hands, flexing her fingers. \u201cI\u2019m not ready to fade away just yet.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I felt a lump in my throat, realizing just how wrong my assumptions had been. \u201cI\u2026 I had no idea.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She reached out and patted my arm. \u201cWell, now you do. And if you\u2019re ever worried again, just come on over. Maybe I\u2019ll teach you a few moves too.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I laughed, feeling a surge of admiration. \u201cI might take you up on that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As I walked back to my house, I glanced over my shoulder. Mrs. Thompson was back at it, kicking high and shouting with all the force of a warrior.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She wasn\u2019t just surviving. She was thriving.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

And I realized that age was just a number.\u00a0Spirit?<\/strong>\u00a0That was timeless.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
