{"id":56126,"date":"2025-03-21T05:45:29","date_gmt":"2025-03-21T05:45:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pulsperry.com\/?p=56126"},"modified":"2025-03-21T05:45:29","modified_gmt":"2025-03-21T05:45:29","slug":"farmer-finds-pastu","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pulsperry.com\/?p=56126","title":{"rendered":"Farmer Finds Pastu>>>"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"576\" height=\"331\" src=\"https:\/\/pulsperry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/image-967.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-56127\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pulsperry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/image-967.png 576w, https:\/\/pulsperry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/image-967-300x172.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 576px) 100vw, 576px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The odd crack of thunder and flash of lightning is to be expected at this time of year in Missouri.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Recent bad weather and flooding have wreaked havoc on the region.<\/strong>After feeding the dairy cows on a Saturday morning, Springfield farmer Jared Blackwelder and his wife Misty heard loud crashes and didn\u2019t give it much thought.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, as Blackwelder returned to the pasture to collect the cows for the evening milking, he came upon a heartbreaking sight: his 32 dairy cows piled on top of each other, dead on the mulch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/dailypositiveinfo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/screen-shot-2017-05-02-at-3-53-56-pm-e1690399330689.png\" alt=\"Farmer Finds Pasture Empty, Sees All 32 Dead Cows In One Big Pile\" class=\"wp-image-15056\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cHe went out to bring the cows in and that\u2019s when he found them,\u201d<\/strong>&nbsp;Stan Coday, president of the Wright County Missouri Farm Bureau, told CBS News.&nbsp;<strong>\u201cIt\u2019s a common occurrence. It does happen. The thing that made this the worst was just the sheer number of cows that were affected.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Coday was advised by a local vet who conducted the inspection that lightning was indeed the cause of death for the cows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s possible that the cows took shelter behind the trees together as the storm raged overhead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cYou\u2019re at the mercy of mother nature,\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0Coday said, adding that he himself lost a cow to lightning several years ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Coday stated that such a loss is incredibly difficult, even though farmers realize the risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cIt\u2019s not like they are pets. But the ones I\u2019m milking, I\u2019ve raised every one of them,\u201d<\/strong>&nbsp;Blackwelder told the Springfield News-Leader.&nbsp;<strong>\u201cDairy cattle are a little different because you mess with them twice a day. It knocks you hard.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s a monetary catastrophe, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the News-Leader, Blackwelder said he had insurance but is unsure if it will cover his losses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He puts the value of each certified organic cow at $2,000 and $2,500, for a grand total loss of almost $60,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cMost producers don\u2019t carry insurance,\u201d<\/strong>&nbsp;Coday said.&nbsp;<strong>\u201cIf you lose a cow you\u2019ve lost everything.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Coday, who breeds beef cows, wants to clarify that meat from Blackwelder\u2019s animals could not be recovered in response to queries from local neighbors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cThose animals are damaged and of course they had been there for a few hours when he found them,\u201d<\/strong>&nbsp;he said.&nbsp;<strong>\u201cIn processing an animal, there\u2019s a process that needs to be gone through.
