He had thrown Harriet a grand party, complete with mascots and a jumping castle. My heart sank. My daughter had a new dad\u2014one who could give her everything I couldn\u2019t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I felt utterly ashamed. Unable to face them, I left the gift at their front gate and walked away. I was in a dark place, lost and hopeless. With no future in sight, I decided to leave the coast and start over elsewhere. The only thing I owned was the house my father, Frank, had left me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Desperate for money, I sold the house and moved into a small apartment in another state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To survive, I worked odd jobs whenever I could. But two years after abandoning my family, I found myself broke again.
