Back home, the news was met with celebratory messages from political heavyweights, including President&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.newsner.com\/tag\/donald-trump\/\">Donald Trump<\/a>&nbsp;and Vice President&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.newsner.com\/tag\/jd-vance\/\">JD Vance.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-main.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2025\/05\/09142357\/GettyImages-2214206262.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-169539\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Vatican Media\/Vatican Pool \u2013 Corbis\/Getty Images<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Trump took to Truth Social to praise the milestone:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201dCongratulations to Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, who was just named Pope. It is such an honor to realize that he is the first American Pope. What excitement, and what a Great Honor for our Country. I look forward to meeting Pope Leo XIV. It will be a very meaningful moment!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>JD Vance was equally eager to chime in, writing on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/JDVance\/status\/1920550545061810261\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">X<\/a>&nbsp;(formerly Twitter):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201dCongratulations to Leo XIV, the first American Pope, on his election! I\u2019m sure millions of American Catholics and other Christians will pray for his successful work leading the Church. May God bless him!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-is-the-new-pope-anti-trump\">Is the new Pope \u201danti-Trump\u201d?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>But if Vance and Trump were hoping for a warm embrace from the Vatican, they might want to brace themselves. MAGA supporters have already started labeling the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.newsner.com\/celebrity\/pope-leo-xiv-maga-supporters\/\">new Pope as \u201canti-Trump\u201d<\/a>&nbsp;\u2014 and when you take a closer look at some of Pope Leo XIV\u2019s past statements, critics may feel they\u2019ve got a point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>F\u00f6r Leo XIV has made no effort to hide his disapproval of some of their views \u2014 especially when it comes to Vance. In fact, a verified X account associated with the new pope shared a pointed article back in February, from National Catholic Reporter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The criticism of Vice President JD Vance, who converted to Catholicism in 2019, escalated over his interpretation of Jesus\u2019 teachings, according to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/politics-news\/pope-leo-social-media-posts-vance-rcna205677\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NBC<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201dJD Vance is wrong: Jesus doesn\u2019t ask us to rank our love for others.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That op-ed was a direct response to Vance\u2019s controversial comments on Fox News back in February, when he said: \u201dThere is a Christian concept that you love your family and then you love your neighbor, and then you love your community, and then you love your fellow citizens, and then after that, prioritize the rest of the world. A lot of the far left has completely inverted that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-main.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2025\/05\/09142612\/GettyImages-2203492072.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-169540\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Brandon Bell\/Getty Images<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>By resharing that article, Leo XIV made it pretty clear where he stands \u2014 and it wasn\u2019t next to the Vice President.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The most recent activity on Pope Leo XIV\u2019s verified X account came in mid-April, when he shared a post from a Catholic commentator criticizing Donald Trump and El Salvador\u2019s President Nayib Bukele for joking about the deportation of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Maryland resident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The post included a link to an article from the&nbsp;<em>Catholic Standard<\/em>, where Bishop Evelio Menjivar posed a pointed question to fellow Catholics: \u201cIs your conscience not disturbed?
