Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost \u2013 now known as Pope Leo XIV \u2014 is the first pope from the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 69-year-old from Chicago is known as a leader with global experience. He spent much of his career as a missionary in South America and most recently led a powerful Vatican office for bishop appointments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His election represents continuity with the papacy of the late Pope Francis<\/a>, and he is expected to continue Francis\u2019 reforms of the church as well as his focus on poverty and marginalized people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here\u2019s what else you should know about the new American pontiff:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. He was the \u2018least American\u2019 of the American cardinals<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Prevost was born in Chicago. But inside the Vatican, where he eventually lived and worked, he was considered the \u201cleast American\u201d of the US cardinals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He worked for a decade in Trujillo, Peru, and was later appointed bishop of Chiclayo, another Peruvian city, where he served from 2014 to 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He speaks fluent Spanish and Italian \u2013 both of which he displayed during his first address to the public in St. Peter\u2019s Square.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. He was well regarded by Pope Francis<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The late Pope Francis \u201crespected him and thought of him very highly,\u201d according to CNN\u2019s Vatican correspondent Christopher Lamb. \u201cClearly Pope Francis saw in him something \u2013 he saw him as a capable leader.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lamb met the new Pope Leo XIV when he was a cardinal and said he came across \u201ca very thoughtful person, a very measured person.\u201d Overall, he came across understated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. He\u2019s a member of the Augustinian order<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Pope Leo is a member of the Augustinian religious order, which is spread across the world. He led the order for more than a decade as its prior general.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The new pontiff used his first remarks to say he is a son of St. Augustine, and he quoted the saint\u2019s famous phrase: \u201cFor you, I am a bishop, with you, after all, I am a Christian.\u201d That reflects the idea that all the people in the church hierarchy \u2013 from leaders to everyday members \u2013 walk together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. He has strong leadership experience<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Pope Francis appointed Prevost to be the prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops, which is in charge of assessing bishop candidates and making recommendations for new appointments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also served as the president of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFrom very young, he was appointed to leadership roles,\u201d said Elise Allen, CNN\u2019s Vatican analyst. \u201cHe\u2019s seen as somebody who is calm and balanced, who is even-handed and who is very clear on what he thinks needs to be done \u2026 but he\u2019s not overly forceful in trying to make that happen.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5. He has a missionary focus<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI still consider myself a missionary. My vocation, like that of every Christian, is to be a missionary, to proclaim the Gospel wherever one is,\u201d Prevost said in an interview with Vatican News shortly after he moved into his leadership role in Rome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He once said in an interview his time in Peru was the life experience that shaped him the most.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHe\u2019s somebody that, even though he\u2019s from the West, would be very attentive to the needs of a global church,\u201d Allen said. \u201cYou\u2019re talking about somebody who spent over half of his ecclesial career abroad as a missionary in Peru.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

6. He\u2019s also a Peruvian citizen<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Leo is a dual citizen of the United States and Peru. The American-born pontiff obtained Peruvian citizenship in August 2015, according to Peru\u2019s National Migration Registry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Peruvian President Dina Boluarte called his election a \u201chistoric moment for Peru and the world.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

7. His papal name reflects commitment to poor<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The last pope to take the name Leo, Pope Leo XIII, was a pope on the side of the poor and who stood up for workers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leo XIII, who was pope from 1878 to 1903, had a strong emphasis on workers\u2019 rights and Catholic social doctrine \u2013 so the choice of that name for the new pontiff makes a strong statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

8. He\u2019s seen as a centrist unifier<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

He is in line with Francis on the direction of the church and on the process to foster a more inclusive global church, but he is expected to lead as his own man.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leo is expected to lean more progressive on social issues like migration and poverty but fall more in line with moderates on moral issues of Catholic doctrine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In order to a get a two-thirds majority in the College of Cardinals, he would have had to have had broad appeal, even among more moderate or conservative members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

9. He studied math at Villanova<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Prevost earned his bachelor\u2019s degree in mathematics from Villanova University in Pennsylvania and went on receive his diploma in theology from the Catholic Theological Union of Chicago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He was eventually sent to Rome to study canon law, and later in his career, he taught canon law in the seminary in Trujillo, Peru.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

10. He\u2019s a fan of tennis<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI consider myself quite the amateur tennis player,\u201d Prevost said in an interview with the Augustinian Order shortly after he became a cardinal. \u201cSince leaving Peru I have had few occasions to practice, so I am looking forward to getting back on the court.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
