I wasn\u2019t a great liar, and my grandma \u2014 who was watching me that day \u2014 could tell something was off. Instead of calling my bluff, she calmly said, \u201cAlright, if you\u2019re too sick for school, we\u2019ll just go to the doctor and get you checked out.\u201d I panicked a little but stuck to the act, thinking I\u2019d just get a free day at home. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Three hours later, I found myself being rushed to the emergency room. Turns out, my \u201cfake\u201d stomachache was actually a case of acute appendicitis. The doctors said if I\u2019d waited even a few more hours, my appendix would\u2019ve burst \u2014 and things could\u2019ve gone very badly. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I hadn\u2019t even felt that bad earlier, just a mild ache that I exaggerated to get out of math class.
