Every year, my family holds a reunion at my parents\u2019 house. It\u2019s usually a warm, joyful weekend \u2014 except when my brother-in-law Tom shows up. He\u2019s a successful lawyer with a habit of reminding everyone just how successful he is. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This year, he arrived late in a flashy red Ferrari, revving the engine until the whole family turned to look. As usual, he basked in the attention, bragging about the car\u2019s cost, speed, and the bonus that bought it. At dinner, my husband David \u2014 a dedicated high school teacher \u2014 shared a moving story about one of his students who had overcome major odds to earn a scholarship. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The table was quiet, touched by the story. Then Tom sneered. \u201cThat\u2019s sweet, David. But you\u2019ll never own a Ferrari on a teacher\u2019s salary.\u201d His wife \u2014 my sister \u2014 chimed in, \u201cYou really settled, didn\u2019t you?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You could\u2019ve aimed higher.\u201d David, always calm, just smiled. \u201cI love what I do. It\u2019s not about money.\u201d The room turned tense. I was furious but said nothing. I had a feeling karma would handle it. And it did \u2014 just days later. Tom\u2019s Ferrari broke down on his way to an important meeting. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He had no wallet, his phone battery was dying, and he had no choice but to take the bus \u2014 in his expensive suit, completely out of place. As fate would have it , David was on that same bus. While Tom awkwardly clung to the railing, David sat calmly reading a book. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

When he spotted Tom, he gave him a friendly wave and invited him to sit down. During the chaotic ride, Tom fell into an elderly woman\u2019s lap, got scolded, missed his meeting, and ended up soaked in sweat and mud. His boss was furious. He lost the client \u2014 and some of his pride. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the next family gathering, Tom arrived quietly, no big entrance. During dinner, he cleared his throat and said, \u201cDavid, I owe you an apology. I judged you unfairly. I\u2019ve learned that success isn\u2019t about wealth or status \u2014 it\u2019s about purpose. And you live yours every day.\u201d David smiled. \u201cThanks, Tom.
