The US President declaring himself a \u2018king\u2019 has caused some critics to question whether the US is being considered a democracy or a monarchy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On 19 February, 78-year-old Donald Trump used his own social media platform, Truth Social, to write: \u201cCONGESTION PRICING IS DEAD. Manhattan, and all of New York, is SAVED. LONG LIVE THE KING!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The comment came after the Trump administration moved to end the New York City congestion pricing plan \u2013 a program which would see drivers entering the city in some areas being charged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The White House claimed the US federal government has jurisdiction over roads leading to New York and that the controversial toll would \u2018unfairly burden working-class residents in the region\u2019, according to the BBC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 47th President of the United States\u2019 statement has been reshared by the official White House X account alongside an illustrated picture in the style of a TIME Magazine cover.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The image depicted Trump wearing a crown and featured the words \u2018LONG LIVE THE KING\u2019 in the bottom left-hand corner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This seemingly computer-generated image has caused a flurry of social media users to comment on the upload.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Taking to X to have their say, one critic wrote: \u201cIsn\u2019t the whole point of America even existing to not have a monarch?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A second argued: \u201cI thought that we lived in a Democracy, not a Monarchy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe literally fought a revolution to NOT have a king,\u201d replied someone else, referring to the American Revolution, which took place between 1765 and 1783.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

JB Pritzker, Illinois\u2019 Democratic Governor, also responded to the faux magazine cover.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He wrote: \u201cAs Governor of Illinois, my oath is to the Constitution of our state and our nation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe don\u2019t have kings in America, and I won\u2019t bend the knee to one.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yet, many Trump supporters liked the controversial post, with one writing: \u201cHe looks good in a crown, definitely should get one.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLooks like someone\u2019s feeling royal today! The crown emoji is practically mandatory right now,\u201d another replied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A third commented: \u201cI VOTED FOR THIS!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

New US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy told New York Governor Kathy Hochul that he would be rescinding approval of the program, calling it a \u2018slap in the face to working class Americans\u2019.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Commuters using the highway system to enter New York City have already financed the construction and improvement of these highways through the payment of gas taxes and other taxes,\u201d he remarked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe toll program leaves drivers without any free highway alternative, and instead, takes more money from working people to pay for a transit system and not highways. It\u2019s backwards and unfair.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gov Hochul has since responded, claiming the state hasn\u2019t \u2018laboured under a King in over 250 years\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We sure as hell are not going to start now. In case you don\u2019t know New Yorkers, we\u2019re going to fight. We do not back down, not now, not ever,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

New York officials have also vowed to \u2018fight\u2019 the Trump administration in order to bring the proposed $9 (\u00a37.15) toll into play.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to reports from the BBC, the congestion charge will affect all vehicles entering Manhattan between 60th Street and the southern tip of the island in the Financial District between 5am and 9pm on weekdays and from 9am-9pm on weekends, .<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Transportation officials argue that the program would help first responders reach emergencies quicker and that money raised from the tolls would help fund a regeneration of the New York subway system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
