It\u2019s been 10 days now since the new Bishop of Rome, Pope Leo XIV, was declared following the passing of the late Pope Francis on Easter Monday (21 April).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 69-year-old has since had his first mass, in which he spoke English, and has sparked his social media debut ahead of his upcoming inaugural mass which is set to organize at the Vatican this Sunday (18 May).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But, before that, the world has been given a glance of Pope Leo\u2019s official papal portrait and people were quick to question one particular detail about it.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Now, it didn\u2019t take long for people to rush online to express their thoughts on the image which sees the Chicago-born pope donning his white dress robes with a large gold cross around his neck as he softly smiles head-on.tail<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A second replied: \u201cI\u2019ve been wanting to know that for years. I think \u2018P.M.\u2019 used to be used, which I think would be \u2018Pontifex Maximus\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBut more recent popes have used \u2018P.P.\u2019. When I looked it up recently, one answer I found was that it means \u2018Pastor Pastorum\u2019 \u2013 \u2018Pastor of Pastors\u2019\/\u2019Shepherd of Shepherds\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m not sure if that\u2019s accurate but it sounds more plausible to me than other suggestions (for example \u2018Papa et Pontifex\u2019 \u2013 \u2018Pope and Pontiff\u2019).\u201d<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A third added: \u201cYou are correct. It\u2019s Pastor Pastorum.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cPastor Pastorum,\u201d agreed another. \u201cLatin for \u2018Shepherd of Shepherds\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier today (16 May), the pontiff made some pretty fearless statements regarding marriage and abortion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

AP News reports that he announced that a family is founded on the \u2018stable union between a man and a woman\u2019 \u2013 a statement which quite clearly excludes any non-heteronormative relationships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pope Leo confirmed that it was up to governments to build peaceful societies \u2018above all by investing in the family, founded upon the stable union between a man and a woman\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
