The experienced rescuer is usually prepared for an unexpected rescue, but this time, she was going straight to an&nbsp;emergency&nbsp;call.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her coworker Natalie Thompson jumped into the passenger seat to accompany Lochmann on the drive. But as she stared out the window, Thompson spotted someone small and brown hanging out on a side street.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cJust down one of the side streets, Natalie noticed a dog,\u201d Lochmann,&nbsp;Stray Rescue of St. Louis\u2019&nbsp;chief life saving officer, told The Dodo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"792\" height=\"535\" src=\"https:\/\/pulsperry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/1000012694.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-59635\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pulsperry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/1000012694.jpg 792w, https:\/\/pulsperry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/1000012694-300x203.jpg 300w, https:\/\/pulsperry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/1000012694-768x519.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 792px) 100vw, 792px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Stray Rescue of St. Louis<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lochmann didn\u2019t want to leave the dog alone, but she knew the rescue would take some time, and they had a dog with a medical emergency waiting for them. So, she decided to pick up the first dog, then stop by to check on the little dog after.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAfter we got the first dog, we went back down the street where we\u2019d found her earlier, but we didn\u2019t see her anywhere,\u201d Lochmann said. \u201cAnd then we noticed her in an alleyway.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lochmann watched as the dog walked down the side of the alley. The rescuer tried to follow her but quickly lost sight of the dog. She walked to the end of the alleyway, where she found an abandoned multi-floor building and a small&nbsp;field&nbsp;next to it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/pulsperry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/1000012695-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-59636\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pulsperry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/1000012695-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/pulsperry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/1000012695-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/pulsperry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/1000012695.jpg 792w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Stray Rescue of St. Louis<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t see her walking in the field, so I just kind of assumed that she went into the building,\u201d Lochmann said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lochmann entered the building through the first floor and made her way across the junk-scattered room. In the corner, she found a dilapidated staircase that led to the floor above.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere wasn\u2019t a lot on the second floor,\u201d Lochmann said. \u201cBut there was a&nbsp;blanket towards the middle, and I saw her lying there.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"792\" height=\"447\" src=\"https:\/\/pulsperry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/1000012696.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-59637\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pulsperry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/1000012696.jpg 792w, https:\/\/pulsperry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/1000012696-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/pulsperry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/1000012696-768x433.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 792px) 100vw, 792px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Stray Rescue of St. Louis<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lochmann made eye contact with the dog, who seemed really young. She reached for one of her most dependable rescue tools, a slip lead, but quickly realized she didn\u2019t have it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI only had one slip lead with me, and it was on the dog in the Jeep,\u201d Lochmann said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The rescuer ran back to her car to get the slip lead, but when she came back, the dog was nowhere to be found.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"792\" height=\"594\" src=\"https:\/\/pulsperry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/1000012697.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-59638\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pulsperry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/1000012697.jpg 792w, https:\/\/pulsperry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/1000012697-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/pulsperry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/1000012697-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 792px) 100vw, 792px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Stray Rescue of St. Louis<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTurns out there was a door on the second floor that led outside to the back part of the building,\u201d Lochmann said. \u201cI didn\u2019t realize at first that you could get out that way, but she did.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lochmann continued searching for the dog around the outskirts of the building and eventually found her sitting in an open field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Stray Rescue of St. Louis<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The rescuer wasn\u2019t sure what personality the dog might have, so she approached the pup as carefully as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cShe wasn\u2019t coming up to me and I didn\u2019t want her to freak out and take off,\u201d Lochmann said. \u201cSo I just kind of knelt down and started tossing Vienna sausages close to her.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The sausages got her attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cShe followed that trail of Vienna sausages and finally came up to me,\u201d Lochmann said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"645\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/pulsperry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/1000012698-645x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-59639\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pulsperry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/1000012698-645x1024.jpg 645w, https:\/\/pulsperry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/1000012698-189x300.jpg 189w, https:\/\/pulsperry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/1000012698-768x1219.jpg 768w, https:\/\/pulsperry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/1000012698.jpg 792w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 645px) 100vw, 645px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Stray Rescue of St. Louis<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When Lochmann was finally able to put a leash around the dog, she noticed that she was a little skittish. Still, her reaction to being saved conveyed more happiness than fear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSome dogs are more afraid of getting into the Jeep and letting me pick them up, but she put her feet up on the back of the Jeep and let me lift her in,\u201d Lochmann said. \u201cI feel like she was probably ready to go.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"791\" height=\"498\" src=\"https:\/\/pulsperry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/1000012699.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-59640\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pulsperry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/1000012699.jpg 791w, https:\/\/pulsperry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/1000012699-300x189.jpg 300w, https:\/\/pulsperry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/1000012699-768x484.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 791px) 100vw, 791px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Stray Rescue of St. Louis<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lochmann brought the dog, whom she named Dodie, to the vet. So, the vet team put her on a meal plan to help her recover.
