From football hold to cradle hold to laid-back, these are the breastfeeding positions nursing moms will want to know about.

Breastfeeding is natural, but successful nursing takes practice. Many new moms and babies struggle initially. Proper positioning helps your newborn latch effectively, avoiding nipple pain and other issues.

Begin by turning your baby toward your chest, keeping their ear, shoulder, and hip aligned. Use a pillow to raise baby to breast level.

Try these five breastfeeding positions:

Cradle Hold: Baby’s head rests in your elbow; support the body with your arm. Use your free hand to guide the breast.

Crossover Hold: Hold baby’s head with the opposite hand. Support the breast with your free hand.

Football Hold: Baby lies beside you, legs under your arm. Good for C-section recovery, twins, or small babies.

Laid-Back Hold: Recline with baby tummy-to-tummy. Gravity helps with latch and comfort.

Side-Lying: Both of you lie on your sides, facing each other. Ideal for night feeds.

Proper Latch Tips: Tickle baby’s lips, let them open wide, then guide them to latch with mouth over nipple and areola. Avoid forcing the nipple in.

Avoid: Hunching, misalignment, or pulling baby too far away. Always support both comfort and milk flow.

15 Intimate Breastfeeding Photos That Show It’s Not Only Natural but Magical

<h2
