I\u2019m Carly. I\u2019m 32, and I live in a body the world feels entitled to comment on. I\u2019m obese \u2014 not the \u201ccute nickname\u201d kind \u2014 the kind people openly judge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s why, when I fly alone, I always buy two seats. Not for comfort, but for peace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On a recent work trip, I paid $176 for an extra seat. As I settled in, a couple showed up and took the empty seat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI paid for both,\u201d I told them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They laughed. \u201cSeriously? Just for you?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then came the insult: \u201cYou\u2019re being a fat jerk.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I let it go. But once in the air, I made sure to claim my space \u2014 elbows out, chips out. Eventually, the man complained to a flight attendant. She checked the records and confirmed: the seat was mine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He was moved. His girlfriend sneered, \u201cPathetic.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I reported the comment. The crew filed a harassment report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Later, I got an email: the couple was flagged, and I received 10,000 bonus miles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
