But when Rex, my uncle\u2019s retired K9 partner, jumped onto the casket and let out a soft, aching whimper, something in me shattered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Uncle Mateo, a combat vet, and Rex, a jet-black German Shepherd, had been inseparable since the war. After retirement, they continued serving through search and rescue. When Uncle Mateo died suddenly of a heart condition, we all worried about how Rex would cope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the funeral, Rex was released and approached the casket cautiously. Then, he leapt up, laid across it, and began pawing\u2014desperate, confused, and grieving. The funeral director moved to intervene, but I stood in his way. \u201cDon\u2019t,\u201d I said. \u201cHe needs this.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That moment changed everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rex later came to live with me. At first, he mourned quietly. But when I brought him back to my uncle\u2019s ranch and whispered the command \u201cAvanza\u201d\u2014<em>move forward<\/em>\u2014he sprang to life. From then on, we healed together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Months later, Rex and I stood proudly as a new K9 training center was named in Uncle Mateo\u2019s honor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Avanza.
