For months, I\u2019d begged my husband, Tom, to get rid of our moldy old couch. He kept saying \u201ctomorrow,\u201d but tomorrow never came. So, one Saturday, I did it myself\u2014rented a truck and took it to the dump. When Tom got home and saw the new couch, he didn\u2019t smile. Instead, he froze. \u201cPlease tell me you didn\u2019t\u2026\u201d he whispered. Then, panic. \u201cYou threw away the plan?!\u201d I laughed at first, confused, until he grabbed his keys and told me to come with him\u2014to the dump. We raced there in silence, Tom pale and frantic. When we arrived, he begged a worker to let us search. He tore through piles of junk until he found our old couch. He flipped it over, reached inside the lining\u2014and pulled out a faded, childlike map. His hands shook. \u201cThis was the plan my brother and I made. Hideouts, forts, our safe places. We used to keep it in that couch. \u201dI stood there stunned. I didn\u2019t even know Tom had a brother. \u201cWhen Jason was eight,\u201d he whispered, \u201che fell from a tree by one of our hideouts. He didn\u2019t make it. I\u2019ve blamed myself ever since. That map\u2026 it\u2019s all I had left of him.\u201d I hugged him as he cried, realizing it had never been about the couch. It was grief, buried deep, stitched inside torn fabric. That night, we framed the map and hung it in our living room. Years later, our kids made their own version, filled with hideouts and imagination. And just like that, a broken piece of the past turned into a beautiful new tradition<\/p>\n\n\n\n
