Despite the huge quantities of ash emerging from the volcano, authorities said there was no current danger to the population.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The eruption was so powerful that it led to the collapse of part of a crater.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology, surveillance cameras showed \u201ca pyroclastic flow, probably produced by a collapse of material from the northern flank of the south-east crater\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A pyroclastic flow occurs when volcanic rock, ash and hot gases surge from volcanoes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The explosive activity \u201chad transitioned to a lava fountain\u201d, the institute said, with the plume of ash expected to dissipate towards the south-west.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/resizer\/v2\/MO53NWHTUVEMTOT527MHV3QSWU.jpg?auth=c5e7c3781b8c689589393753f23f4678397b5db419753fbc5f0e24114e137753&amp;width=1440&amp;height=960&amp;quality=70&amp;smart=true\" alt=\"Mount Etna exhibits a Strombolian eruption, with a volcanic plume rising from the southeast crater, on June 02, 2025 in Catania, Italy. Authorities urge tourists to avoid the area amid potential dangers.
