Claire had a daughter, Lisa, who lived with her ex-husband, Rick, but came to us on weekends. I thought we were building something beautiful, that we were strong and steady, and that after everything we had been through, life was rewarding us with a happy family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI like Claire,\u201d Mason said one day out of the blue. \u201cShe makes really good waffles, Dad.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI think so too, bud,\u201d I smiled. \u201cI\u2019m just happy you like her.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At first, things were good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mason and Lisa didn\u2019t bond overnight, but eventually, they got along like a house on fire. They built cities out of LEGO blocks, made up stories with their stuffed animals, and went wild making their own ice cream sundaes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Claire wanted to bond with Mason. I trusted her\u2014until I found a drawing: Claire, Mason, Lisa\u2026 and Rick. Then I heard them\u2014Mason asking if Lisa and Rick would live with them.
