\u201cJean, sweetheart,\u201d she said, voice forcedly tender, \u201cthe bike isn\u2019t safe. The tires are worn. I just love you too much to risk it.\u201d<\/p>\n

My jaw dropped. This was the same woman who once said kids needed to fall to learn. Her sudden concern didn\u2019t sit right.<\/p>\n

Jean\u2019s eyes welled with tears. I crouched beside her. \u201cIt\u2019s okay, honey. Maybe Grandma can help us fix it?\u201d<\/p>\n

Jacqueline\u2019s lips thinned. \u201cNo. I\u2019ll return it, have it fixed, and bring it back.\u201d<\/p>\n

But her evasive tone said otherwise.<\/p>\n

I pulled her aside. \u201cWhat\u2019s really going on?\u201d<\/p>\n

After a pause, she confessed, \u201cI saw that same bike at a charity auction. It\u2019s rare\u2014worth a lot. I thought I\u2019d sell it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re selling her bike? For money?\u201d I asked, stunned.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s young. She won\u2019t remember. I could buy her ten bikes.\u201d<\/p>\n

I was furious. \u201cIt\u2019s not just a bike. It\u2019s a memory.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jacqueline left with the bike, ending years of fragile peace.<\/p>\n

But Jean and I rebuilt\u2014together. And we kept pedaling forward<\/p>\n
