A federal appeals court Thursday delayed an order requiring the Trump administration to return control of the California National Guard to Gov. Gavin Newsom, dealing the administration a temporary reprieve to what would have been a major reversal of its policy on the protests in Los Angeles.<\/p>\n

Earlier Thursday, a federal judge in California issued a temporary restraining order that would have blocked Trump\u2019s deployment of California National Guard troops during protests over immigration raids in LA and returned control of the California National Guard to Gov. Gavin Newsom, who did not consent to the Guard\u2019s activation.<\/p>\n

A Ninth Circuit panel paused a judge\u2019s order requiring Trump to return control of California\u2019s National Guard to Governor Newsom. The court set a June 17 hearing. Trump praised the decision, while critics say his military deployment violated state sovereignty and exceeded presidential authority, breaching the Tenth Amendment.<\/p>\n

After the court ruling, Governor Newsom said he was \u201cgratified\u201d and vowed to restore the National Guard to duties like border security and wildfire prevention. He criticized Trump\u2019s \u201cunlawful militarization.\u201d Judge Breyer defended protesters\u2019 First Amendment rights, calling Trump\u2019s justification for the deployment \u201cuntenable and dangerous\u201d to constitutional freedoms<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
