Vincent D\u2019Onofrio is best known for his breakout role as the overweight, mentally unstable Marine recruit Leonard in\u00a0Full Metal Jacket<\/em>\u00a0(1987). To play the part, he gained 70\u201380 pounds and shaved his head\u2014making him nearly unrecognizable. The transformation was so convincing that people, including women, often mistook him for being genuinely unintelligent, which affected how they treated him.<\/p>\n

Before acting, D\u2019Onofrio worked various jobs\u2014like being a bouncer, cab driver, and even a bodyguard for Yul Brynner and Robert Plant. A friend, actor Matthew Modine, encouraged him to audition for Stanley Kubrick\u2019s film, which launched his career. D\u2019Onofrio credits Kubrick for opening doors to more than 50 film roles and major TV parts, including\u00a0Law & Order: Criminal Intent<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Daredevil<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Despite looking very different today, D\u2019Onofrio remains a respected actor. His performance in\u00a0Full Metal Jacket<\/em>\u00a0is still considered one of the most powerful portrayals of psychological decline in film.<\/p>\n
