I’m Carly, and at 32, I’ve learned to navigate a world that polices bodies like mine. I’m obese\u2014no soft, cutesy kind of curvy. I\u2019m the kind of fat that gets unsolicited advice and stares. That\u2019s why, for peace\u2014not luxury\u2014I always buy two seats when flying solo.<\/p>\n

On my way to a work conference, I settled into my window and middle seats, until an entitled couple decided my extra seat was theirs. \u201cYou bought two seats? For yourself?\u201d the man mocked. Then came the insult: \u201cFat jerk.\u201d<\/p>\n

Instead of arguing, I let him sit. Then, I made him regret it.<\/p>\n

I crunched kettle chips loudly, shifted wide with my tablet, and \u201caccidentally\u201d bumped him repeatedly. Twenty minutes later, he was begging the flight attendant for help.<\/p>\n

She checked the manifest. \u201cSir, she purchased both seats.\u201d Boom. He was sent to row 22.<\/p>\n

His girlfriend spewed one last insult\u2014loud enough to draw attention\u2014but the flight attendant wasn\u2019t having it.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat kind of language is unacceptable.\u201d<\/p>\n

I reclaimed my space, spread out, and finally exhaled. I didn\u2019t just win a seat. I won my dignity back<\/p>\n
