Growing up, I had a friend who came from money. She used to eat dinner at our place all the time\u2014she loved our spaghetti nights, even if our kitchen was tiny and our plates mismatched.<\/p>\n
One night, I had dinner at her house instead. The food was incredible\u2014steak, fresh bread, something with truffle oil. But her mom and dad kept giving me these strange looks. Kind, but intense. I couldn\u2019t figure out why.<\/p>\n
The next day, during lunch break, they showed up at my school.<\/p>\n
I was sitting alone under the fig tree by the side gate\u2014my usual quiet spot, away from the cafeteria noise\u2014when her mom walked up to me. She wore a silk blouse and heels that clearly didn\u2019t belong on a school sidewalk.<\/p>\n

My stomach twisted. I nodded, unsure what this was about.<\/p>\n
She motioned toward the parking lot. Her husband was waiting beside their SUV, engine running, windows down, air conditioning humming. He looked nervous\u2014not angry or stern, just\u2026 unsettled.<\/p>\n

\u201cLook,\u201d she began softly, \u201cwe\u2019re sorry if we made you uncomfortable last night. That wasn\u2019t our intention. We just\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n
Her husband interrupted, \u201cWe need to ask something. About your mom.\u201d<\/p>\n
My heart skipped. \u201cWhat about her?\u201d I asked cautiously.<\/p>\n
\u201cIs her name Naya?\u201d he asked. \u201cNaya Kirwan?\u201d<\/p>\n
I froze.<\/p>\n
Only close family ever called her that. And nobody outside of a tight circle even knew her maiden name.<\/p>\n
