From the moment I met James, I knew his mother Evelyn would be a problem. She called me \u201cJennifer,\u201d clung to James like he was her date, and made her disapproval clear in every passive-aggressive message, every uninvited visit.<\/p>\n

Silence.<\/p>\n

Then, my mother\u2014calm, fierce, and unshaken\u2014stood.<\/p>\n

\u201cOf course she\u2019s not, Evelyn. James is sterile. They chose to use a donor. I helped. They didn\u2019t include you because he knew how you\u2019d react.\u201d<\/p>\n
