{"id":68068,"date":"2025-07-14T17:27:15","date_gmt":"2025-07-14T17:27:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pulsperry.com\/?p=68068"},"modified":"2025-07-14T17:27:15","modified_gmt":"2025-07-14T17:27:15","slug":"transgender-man","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pulsperry.com\/?p=68068","title":{"rendered":"Transgender man"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>These days, using someone\u2019s preferred name and pronouns is the best way to demonstrate respect and acknowledgment of their identity<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>be they straight, gay, or transgender<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>However, not everyone adheres to this practice, often clinging to outdated norms or disregarding individuals\u2019 gender identities.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/bennettonpurpose\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Bennett Kaspar-Williams<\/a>, 37, from Los Angeles, welcomed their son Hudson into the world via cesarean in October 2020, with the support of their husband, Malik.<\/p>\n<p>Despite Kaspar-Williams identifying as male and using he\/him\/his pronouns at the time (they now identify as non-binary and use both he\/him\/his and they\/them pronouns) encountered challenges at the hospital when nurses repeatedly misgendered them, referring to them as a mother rather than a father, as per the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/femail\/article-10335475\/A-transgender-father-gave-birth-son-revealed-nurses-misgender-him.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Daily Mail<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure><\/figure>\n<p>Kaspar-Williams began his transition in 2014 after realizing he was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.newsner.com\/tag\/transgender\/\">transgender<\/a>\u00a0in 2011. The couple made the decision to start a family and carefully considered their options \u2014 knowing it would require Bennett to pause the testosterone therapy he had been on for years so his ovaries could resume functioning.<\/p>\n<p>Although Bennett had undergone top surgery, he hadn\u2019t had any procedures on his lower body. After thoughtful reflection, he felt at peace with the idea of carrying a child himself.<\/p>\n<p>Once they began trying, Bennett became pregnant naturally not long after.<\/p>\n<p>\u201dWe had only been trying a short while, so we expected the process to take longer than it did,\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/femail\/article-10335475\/A-transgender-father-gave-birth-son-revealed-nurses-misgender-him.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">said<\/a>\u00a0Bennett.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-disheartened-by-medical-staff\">Disheartened by medical staff<\/h2>\n<p>\u201dThis was just about a week before we went into lockdown here in March 2020, so my high spirits were pretty quickly replaced by anxiety around the pandemic and how I would keep myself and my baby safe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The journey of pregnancy and childbirth was simultaneously fulfilling and challenging for Kaspar-Williams, who found himself disheartened by medical staff assuming his gender and mislabeling him as a mother.<\/p>\n<p>\u201dThe only thing that made me dysphoric about my pregnancy was the misgendering that happened to me when I was getting medical care for my pregnancy,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Although Kaspar-Williams specified their gender on medical forms, the nursing staff continued to misgender them during interactions. Following Hudson\u2019s birth, Kaspar-Williams has actively advocated for the recognition that childbirth is no longer necessarily tied to gender identity.<\/p>\n<figure><\/figure>\n<h2 id=\"h-hard-to-escape\">Hard to escape<\/h2>\n<p>Expressing his distress over being consistently misgendered during childbirth, Kaspar-Williams highlighted the importance of disconnecting womanhood from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.newsner.com\/tag\/motherhood\/\">motherhood<\/a>. He shared his thoughts with the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2021\/12\/22\/transgender-man-who-gave-birth-slams-docs-who-called-him-mom\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">New York Post<\/a>, commenting on the discomfort he felt when repeatedly addressed as \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/en.newsner.com\/tag\/mom\/\">mom<\/a>\u201d despite marking \u201cmale\u201d on medical paperwork.<\/p>\n<p>\u201dThe business of pregnancy \u2013 and yes, I say business, because the entire institution of pregnancy care in America is centred around selling this concept of \u201cmotherhood\u201d \u2013 is so intertwined with gender that it was hard to escape being misgendered,\u201d Bennett says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo one can ever really know whether having\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.newsner.com\/tag\/children\/\">children<\/a>\u00a0is possible until you try \u2014 being born with a uterus doesn\u2019t make conceiving or carrying a certainty,\u201d the father said of their parenthood journey.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s why it\u2019s so important that we stop defining \u2018womanhood\u2019 in terms of \u2018motherhood,\u2019 because it\u2019s a false equivalency that all women can become mothers, that all mothers carry their children, or that all\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.newsner.com\/tag\/people\/\">people<\/a>\u00a0who carry children are mothers.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure><\/figure>\n<p>Choosing to begin their pregnancy journey after separating bodily functions from gender notions, Kaspar-Williams\u2019 story highlights the complexities of identity and the importance of respecting individuals\u2019 self-identification.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What are your opinions on this story?
