A study in <em data-start=\"121\" data-end=\"148\">The Journal of Immunology<\/em> found that changes in a mother&#8217;s gut bacteria during pregnancy could affect her baby\u2019s neurological development. Using mice, researchers from the University of Virginia showed that altered maternal gut microbes led to autism-like behaviors in offspring\u2014linked to an immune molecule called IL-17a. Blocking IL-17a prevented these behaviors. Fecal transplants confirmed the findings. Though promising, these results are based on animals, and scientists stress that more human research is needed.
