Dressed in shorts and tank tops, they set out with just a small backpack containing a camera, water, and phones, planning to return before dark. Hours later, they vanished. The dog returned alone that evening, sparking concern. A search began the next day. Nearly two months later, a local found their backpack\u2014inside, phones, a camera, and clues to a chilling and unsolved mystery<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-stories.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2025\/04\/16081319\/head.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-42119\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Police<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Around 2 PM on April 1, 2014, Lisanne took the last photos of Kris.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the photos has since been interpreted as possibly showing the girls sensing what was to come \u2014 or that something had already happened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kris is leaning forward, with a pained expression on her face, and appears to have her hands bound behind her back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-stories.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2025\/04\/16081406\/plah.avif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-42120\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Police<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The night photos raised many questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why weren\u2019t any pictures taken during the entire week after they went missing, until the night of April 8? What caused the frantic photography session that lasted three hours? Why does no photo show either of the girls\u2019 faces? Why did they leave no message for their loved ones, especially since they must have realized they were likely to die in the jungle?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-stories.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2025\/04\/16081522\/kvist.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-42121\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Police<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-stories.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2025\/04\/16081810\/police.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-42123\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">One of the photos shows toilet paper spread out on the ground, along with a mirror. Some have interpreted the image as the girls possibly spelling out \u201cSOS\u201d on the ground with strips of paper.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Months after their backpack surfaced, more haunting clues emerged. Kris Kremers\u2019 clothes were found folded by a riverbank. Later, a boot with a foot inside and a pelvic bone were discovered. Lisanne\u2019s remains showed natural decay, but Kris\u2019 bones appeared bleached.
