Soldiers with the Colombian military were scouting a well-worn path in Antioquia, an area often used by locals\u2014seemingly calm, deceptively quiet. Alongside them trotted Sans\u00f3n, a highly trained bomb-sniffing dog. Loyal, alert, and focused, Sans\u00f3n had been through countless operations. But none quite like this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Without warning, he halted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His body tensed. A signal only his handler, soldier Carlos Eduardo Bele\u00f1o, truly understood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Moments later\u2014an explosion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The blast tore through the air, ripping into the earth and into Sans\u00f3n\u2019s leg. Dust, panic, confusion. But amidst the chaos, Sans\u00f3n didn\u2019t run. He didn\u2019t cry out. Thirty-six soldiers and civilians had been walking that same path. Thirty-six people who would have been within the deadly range of that explosive, had it not been for Sans\u00f3n\u2019s instincts and training. By detecting the bomb\u2014and triggering it before others reached it\u2014Sans\u00f3n prevented what could\u2019ve been a catastrophic loss of life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Soldiers rushed to his side, wrapping his injured leg, whispering reassurances, calling for help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A video later showed him being carried with care, surrounded by those he\u2019d just protected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the veterinary clinic, the news was grim. The damage to Sans\u00f3n\u2019s leg was too severe. Surgeons performed an amputation\u2014his days of active service were over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But his story was far from done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Colombian military called him a hero. Not just any hero\u2014a four-legged hero. One whose courage and sacrifice would echo far beyond the battlefield.<\/p>\n\n\n
