Recent research, published in <em>The Journal of Immunology<\/em>, suggests a compelling link between a mother\u2019s gut microbiome and her child\u2019s likelihood of developing autism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Using mice, scientists found that maternal microbiota plays a more significant role in autism risk than the offspring&#8217;s own microbiome. Lead researcher John Lukens, PhD, of the University of Virginia, noted, \u201cThe microbiome is really important to the calibration of how the offspring\u2019s immune system is going to respond to an infection or injury or stress.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A key factor is interleukin-17a (IL-17a), an immune molecule involved in inflammatory diseases and brain development. Mice predisposed to inflammation via IL-17a gave birth to pups displaying autism-like behaviors\u2014unless IL-17a was suppressed during pregnancy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To confirm the gut microbiota\u2019s role, researchers performed fecal transplants. Mice that received microbiota from inflammation-prone mothers also produced offspring with similar neurological symptoms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Though early-stage, these findings highlight how maternal gut health may influence neurodevelopment.
