But Leo XIV\u2019s election wasn\u2019t the only surprise \u2014 his choice of name has sparked even more curiosity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The last pope to use the name Leo was Leo XIII, who served from 1878 to 1903 and was known as \u201cthe social pope\u201d for championing workers\u2019 rights and standing up for the poor. He has reposted tweets criticizing Donald Trump, condemned Vice President JD Vance\u2019s interpretation of Christianity, and made strong statements in his first sermon about \u201cviolations of human dignity\u201d and society\u2019s obsession with \u201ctechnology, money, success, power [or] pleasure.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-a-retired-school-principal\">A retired school principal<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, one of the people closest to him \u2014 his own brother \u2014 is speaking out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>John Prevost, Pope Leo\u2019s older brother and a retired Catholic school principal, recently sat down with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/live\/2025\/05\/08\/world\/pope-conclave-news#pope-leo-xiv-brother-john-prevost\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The New York Times<\/a>&nbsp;and offered rare personal insights into the man now leading the world\u2019s 1.3 billion Catholics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think we\u2019ll see extremes either way,\u201d John said, describing Leo as someone who takes a centrist approach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But one sensitive and pressing issue \u2014 both globally and in his home country of the U.S. \u2014 might just be enough to make the Pope speak out forcefully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pulsperry.com\/?p=70649\">also read&#8230;.<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Just a few weeks ago, Robert Francis Prevost was a relatively low-profile cardinal from Chicago.
