Dad gets massively shamed for putting leashes on his 5-year-old quintuplets

Jordan Driskell, a 31-year-old father, faces the unique challenge of raising five quintuplets who are now 5 years old. Managing a brood of children all the same age can be demanding, especially during their curious and exploratory phase.

In a bid to navigate this demanding scenario, Driskell sought a creative solution. He opted for child leashes to help control his energetic youngsters when they venture out together in public. Previously, the family utilized a cumbersome 6-seat stroller, which proved tiresome for both the children and the parents. The stroller hindered the children’s freedom and mobility, making outings inconvenient and less enjoyable.

The use of leashes allows the quintuplets to wander and explore their surroundings safely while keeping them within sight and under control. This practical approach ensures the children’s safety without inhibiting their natural curiosity and energy.

A video shared by Driskell of their family outing to the aquarium garnered significant attention, with over 3 million views. However, the viral video also attracted negative feedback, particularly concerning the use of leashes on children. Critics argued that children should not be treated like animals and expressed disdain towards the parents, suggesting they should have better managed their large family or trained their children more effectively.

In response to the backlash, Dr. Deborah Gilboa, an expert in parenting and adolescent development, offered a different perspective. She defended the use of leashes, stating that they do not equate children to animals and can be valuable tools, especially for younger or neuro-diverse children, in public settings. Dr. Gilboa emphasized the importance of developing verbal communication skills in children and suggested that by the ages of eight or nine, neurotypical children should no longer require leashes as they should have developed sufficient listening skills by then.

Ultimately, Driskell’s decision to use leashes reflects a pragmatic approach to parenting, prioritizing the safety and well-being of his children while allowing them to explore and engage with the world around them. As the quintuplets grow and develop, Driskell and his wife will continue to adapt their parenting strategies to meet the evolving needs of their unique family dynamic.
