Actress and singer Jane Birkin, known for her influential career and iconic style, was found dead in her Paris apartment at the age of 76, according to French media reports. Birkin’s body was discovered by her caretaker. While the exact cause of her death remains unknown, Birkin had a history of health issues, including a leukemia diagnosis in 2002 and a stroke in 2021. Earlier this year, she also had to cancel several engagements due to a damaged shoulder blade.

Birkin’s name also became synonymous with luxury when the Hermès Birkin handbag was named after her in 1981. The bag, renowned for its exclusivity and high price, was inspired by Birkin’s iconic status.

In 2015, Birkin publicly requested that Hermès stop using her name for the bag after witnessing footage of cruel practices involved in the production of crocodile leather. She issued a statement through Agence France-Presse, demanding that Hermès implement better standards or rename the bag. “Having been made aware of the cruel practices endured by crocodiles during their slaughter for the production of Hermès bags bearing my name, I have requested that the Birkin be renamed,” she stated.

Hermès responded with a commitment to ethical treatment of crocodiles and reassured that they would work on improving their practices. The brand’s statement read, “Following the heartfelt emotion expressed by Jane Birkin and her request for explanation, Hermès, in agreement with her, reiterates its firm commitment to the ethical treatment of crocodiles in its partner farms.”
